A Cult Book on Budapest

2011_borito.jpg(For Serious Travellers and First Time Visitors Alike.) Budapest: a Critical Guide is an unusual, cult book — possibly the truest, most personal, and funniest insider’s city guide ever written about any major city, updated as often as necessary, by Budapest author/historian András Török. With 41 “idiotproof” maps, (by András Felvidéki, illustrator), 5 walks, 36 independent restaurant tips, and a lot more. Price:  HUF 4500 (or EUR 17)  (Park Publishers, www.parkkiado.hu)
“I came across this little gem in a small bookstore while strolling down Andrassy Ut. in Budapest. It's essentially a loving and learned essay on the city slyly disguised as a guidebook. Of course he's got the requisite walking maps, addresses and practical information, but what he really does is to capture the soul of the city and its denizens, past and present. It's clear that his evocative observations and opinions, laced with wit and candor could only have come from one clever guy who's truly lived the life in Budapest. You'll read every page of this book as though it were a novel. ” (From a reader.)

Why It is different
It is unlike any other “guidebook”. It is funny patchwork of hard facts and personal, biased opinion, and a very good read — away from the town or on the spot. There are no photos in it, but 41 “foolproof” maps, ones that describe the 5 circular walks, that give you a less and less touristy image of the city.
